Ground attack tops Grove City

Meadville rolls up 574 rushing yards in 67-27 victory

GREENVILLE — Meadville didn't spend much time in the red zone Saturday night.

The Bulldogs ran right through it, instead.

Nine of Meadville's 10 touchdowns occurred on plays of 20 yards or more in its 67-27 District 10 Class 5A football championship victory over Grove City at Snyder-Stone Stadium in Greenville.

Meadville scored on its first 10 possessions and never attempted a pass all night. The only time the Bulldogs (10-2) were stopped was when they took a knee to end the game at the Grove City 35.

Meadville rushed for 574 yards on the night.

“That's Meadville football,” coach Ray Collins said. “We don't throw the ball. We're blessed with three excellent running backs who block for each other and willingly share the carries.

“We've got a pretty good offensive line to go with them, too.”

Isaiah Manning had 15 carries for 267 yards and four touchdowns, Journey Brown 13 carries for 169 yards and two scores, Antonio Ferraro nine carries for 123 yards and two TDs.

“If they get past your linebackers and into space, you're not gonna catch them,” Grove City coach Sam Mowrey said. “That's just a great football team.”

The Eagles (10-2) weren't so bad in their own right this season.

Grove City quarterback Kameron Patterson was limited to 86 yards passing Saturday, though he did have touchdown tosses of 21 yards to A.J. Turner and Logan Lutz. He threw for 2,671 yards on the year, falling 39 yards short of the Mercer County single-season record.

Patterson finished with 32 touchdown passes.

“He continually worked at making himself a great player,” Mowrey said. “I'm grateful to this entire senior class. These kids never stopped believing in themselves.

“Their goal from the start of this season was the District 10 championship. A lot of people probably chuckled at that, but we got here. We just didn't finish the way we wanted.”

Meadville had a lot to do with that. The Bulldogs had a 20-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old. Ferraro scored on a 40-yard run one play after Meadville recovered an onsides kick to begin the contest.

Christopher Fitzpatrick returned a punt 53 yards for a score less than two minutes later. Brown broke loose for a 74-yard touchdown run on Meadville's next offensive snap.

Brown has now rushed for 2,226 yards and 39 touchdowns this year.

“Penn State is recruiting him as a running back,” Collins said of the senior standout. “Temple has interest in him ... Interest from other schools is building, too.”

Nick Murawski returned a kickoff 77 yards for a Grove City touchdown and Trey Adams scored on a 3-yard run for the Eagles. Adams rushed for 919 yards this year.
