Tone-deaf cartoon

The political cartoon presented in the Butler Eagle on June 20 was more than perplexing.

It depicted people waiting in line to enter a gun store to purchase AR-15 and AK-47 Rifles. The last man waiting turns to an NRA representative and states, “Couldn’t we agree to ban machine guns and have background checks on all guns?”; to which the NRA rep screams, “Terrorist!”

One has to wonder, what exactly was the purpose behind this cartoon? Research will show that the AR-15 is the weapon of choice for home protection and it is not a machine gun. Neither is an AK-47.

If the cartoonist meant to present humor, he failed miserably. If he wished to show ignorance on the part of the American people about firearms, he may have succeeded somewhat, because most Americans are aware or should be aware that fully automatic “machine guns” have been banned to the general public since 1934.

Was the cartoonist completely ignorant of gun laws? In which case, he should have done some research before showing his foolishness.

Was he attempting to marginalize the NRA? This too failed.

I have seen the video of Hillary Clinton stating that if president she would take a look at what Australia did with guns, which was complete confiscation and destruction.

Perhaps she needs to understand that all good leaders lead by example, and disarm her security detail. Or is her life worth more than the rest of ours?
