Balancing act

BUTLER TWP — When first-year Butler girls lacrosse coach Ashley Argyros looks at the scorebook at the end of a game, she wants to see lots of names.

Lots of names with goals scored next to them.

She got her wish Tuesday night in a 12-8 win over Knoch at Art Bernardi Stadium.

Six different players scored Butler's six first-half goals.

Senior Mya Reese and freshman Karolyn Miller led the Golden Tornado attack with three goals each in the game.

“You can't rely on one or two people scoring,” Argyros said. “What happens if that person gets hurt? We have a bench full of people who can score.”

Knoch just wishes it had a bench full of people.

The Knights' roster was whittled down from 17 to 13 through the course of the season thanks to injury.

While Knoch spent a lot of time before the season in conditioning knowing it would be taxed, the short bench caught up with the Knights in several games this season.

The game against Butler (11-4) was one of them.

Knoch (5-8) trailed just 6-4 at the half and 7-5 five minutes into the second half, but faded as Butler rolled off five consecutive goals to take over the gae.

“We've done a lot of conditioning, but there's only so much you can do with two on your bench,” said Knoch coach Kristen Gagen. “That takes a toll. I think our girls gave a really good effort and our defense made some good stops and made good interceptions. We just gave up too many quick goals and things got away from us quickly.”

Vanessa McRandal led Knoch with four goals.

Argyros wasn't happy with the way her playoff-bound team played in the first half.

“I told them the way they were playing wasn't what got them here,” Argyros said. “I told them they needed to play their game. It just took a little positive encouragement and they figured it out and got it going.”

Knoch scored three goals in the final 1:49, including the final two tallies of the night from McRandal.

Hannah Welty, Stephanie Lloyd and another freshman, Eliza Drohan, each scored two goals for Butler, which celebrated its playoff berth after the game.

“We knew we were in,” Argyros said. “But 11-4 is better than 10-5.”

Butler will play a team to be determined at a site and time to be determined to open the WPIAL Division II playoffs next week.

Argyros said before the season started she believed the talent was there to make the postseason.

Her players needed a little more convincing.

“It took a little bit of positive encouragement,” Argyros said. “When they got a couple of wins under their belt, they got some confidence. I think they were a little hesitant at first, but all it took was them believing in themselves. I couldn't ask for a better team for my first year coaching her at Butler.”
