Horstman sets record

Butler sprinter Emily Horstman, far right, gets set to cross the finish line with a school and Pine-Richland Invitational record time of 11.96 seconds Friday. Horstman eclipsed the Golden Tornado record once held by Tara Lowe.

PINE TWP — Records are made to be broken — and Emily Horstman snapped a pair of them in the same event Friday at the Pine-Richland Invitational.

Butler's senior sprinter ran the 100 meters in 11.96 seconds, breaking the school record set by Tara Lowe six years ago. She also bested the event record of 12.1, set by Nicole Scherer of Burrell last year.

Scherer went on to win the PIAA Class AA title in the 100 last year. She competed in the Baldwin Invitational Friday.

“I was surprised and excited to break 12 seconds,” Horstman said. “I thought I ran well. I got a good jump out of the blocks.

“I didn't realize I ran that kind of time.”

Butler track coach John Williams didn't expect Horstman to challenge for any records on this night.

“It was chilly and overcast,” he said. “The wind was at her back, but the conditions were less than ideal. And she's not running at 100 percent.

“May is when you want to shine on the track. Emily got off to a great start that way today.”

Horstman sprained her ankle shortly before a sprint event at the Butler Invitational two weeks ago. She had been working with the trainers in rehabbing the ankle and had been working out with it taped up.

The ankle was not taped Friday, “but she's still not at 100 percent. I'm guessing she's at 90 percent or so,” Williams said.

“When the weather gets hot later this month, I'm looking forward to seeing what her times are.”

Horstman didn't qualify for the PIAA meet in the 100 last year. She went in the 200 meters and 4x100 relay.

This year, she's excelling in the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x400.

“The times in those relays are among the best in the WPIAL,” longtime Butler girls track coach Mike Seybert said.

“Breaking our 100 meter record is a big deal when you consider the sprinters we've had come through here. We're talking about Annessa Schnur, Tara, Lea Renwick ... There's been a bunch of them,” Seybert added.

Horstman will attend Slippery Rock University next year and run track there. She ran the hurdles in junior high.

That did not translate to high school competition.

“I kept hitting the hurdle and falling down,.” Horstman said, laughing.”That was the end of that.”

Her next goal is the 200-meter record of 24.9 at Butler. She has run that event in 25.5.

“If I can run a sub-25, I should get it,” Horstman said. “I feel like I can get there.”

Williams agrees.

“She's a senior and she's running like it,” the coach said. “She's getting everything she can out of this season.”
