Mars cruises to 81-36 win over Valley

Mars gave itself a little going away present Tuesday night.

Before heading to Las Vegas to participate in the Tarkanian Classic, the Planets' boys basketball team cruised to an 81-36 section victory over Valley.

John Castello scored 22 points and Bailey Trzeciak added 13. Mars had a 23-2 lead after the first quarter.

Burrell 67, Freeport 63 — Struggles at the free-throw line hurt the Yellowjackets in a Section 1-AAA road loss to the Buccaneers.

Freeport shot 48 percent (10-of-21) from the charity stripe in the loss. Mason Eddinger contributed 15 points and seven rebounds for the Yellowjackets (2-4, 0-2).

Josh Beale (16 points), Kris Keppel (13) and Brandon Hochbein (12) also scored in double figures for Freeport.

Girls basketball

Mars dropped a barrage of 3-pointers, piling up nine of them in a 77-58 non-section home win over Allderdice.

Nicole McCloud led the Planets (4-2) with 24 points and made three treys. Tai Johnson (21 points) and Laurel Wasylson (15) also finished in double figures for Mars.

Jake Huffman, Cami Tack, Matt Corlew, Kyle Wassum, Jerry Newman and Jason Hansotte all shot 100s to help Butler beat Waynesburg 798-58x-791-52.

Private Schools

Michaella Roth scored 15 points, compiled eight assists and five steals as the First Baptist Christian School girls basketball team defeated Seeds of Faith Christian Academy, 50-22, recently.

Roth sank three 3-pointers. Shelby Poorman added 15 points and eight rebounds, Katelyn Gavinski eight points and eight rebounds, Caitlyn Mueller eight steals to the win.
