CWNC taking on Jeannette Friday

The Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic football team is one step away from making its second appearance at Heinz Field for the WPIAL Class A title game in three seasons.

Overcoming the final hurdle won't be easy for the second-seeded Trojans, who lost in the semifinals last season. North Catholic will take on Jeanette at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Valley High School.

The third-seeded Jayhawks are 10-1, with their only loss coming to top-seeded Clairton, 56-29. Jeanette is led by dual-threat quarterback Giovonne Sanders, who has thrown for 1,396 yards and 14 touchdowns in addition to rushing for 654 more.

The Jayhawks leading rusher Kareem Hall, who has 743 rushing yards, missed the past two games with an injury.

North Catholic, which is 11-0 and in the semifinals for the fourth straight season, has plenty of fire power of its own.

Trojans quarterback Erick Taylor has passed for more 1,861 yards, including 311 in North Catholic's win over Bishop Canevin last Friday.

Mario Latronica leads North Catholic with 918 yards rushing and has scored 12 touchdowns.
