Karns City rolls past Punxsy, 62-6

Gremlins bump record to 9-0

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It took just 12 seconds for the Karns City football team to put a dent in the scoreboard.

By the end of the night, the Gremlins had battered the scoreboard and Punxsutawney in a 62-6 road win Friday.

“Until I see film,” said Karns City coach Ed Conto, “I have nothing bad to say.”

That's because Karns City (9-0, 4-0) dominated every phase of the game against overmatched Punxsutawney (3-6, 2-2).

The Gremlins took advantage of the Chucks' muff of an opening kickoff and scored one play later on an 18-yard run by Collin Dunmyre.

Karns City scored three more touchdowns in the first quarter and led 42-6 at the half.

Maverick Kelsea scored four of the Gremlins' nine touchdowns in the game and rushed for a team-leading 90 yards on just 10 carries.

Dunmyre also had two TD runs and gained 82 yards on just seven attempts.

The win came a week after Keystone gave the Gremlins all they could handle in a double-overtime game that Karns City pulled out, 48-40.

There was no such drama in this game.

“All week during practice we focused on the little things,” Kelsea said. “The line getting to their reads on defense, the offensive line getting their punches and steps. It was all them tonight. The lines were physical up front and they paved the way for our backs.”

Karns City also had a solid passing game with both Jacob King and Cullen Williams under center.

King was 6-of-8 for 99 yards and a pair of touchdown passes — 38 yards to Evan Stitt and 15 yards to Kaiden Powers. Williams was 4-of-4 for 48 yards.

“We were trying to work on our passing game and I thought the kids were sharp,” Conto said.

Karns City rolled up 27 first downs, 365 yards rushing and 512 total yards — all on a muddy field where footing was treacherous.

“Good thing most of my backs are mudders,” Conto said. “They did OK with it.”

Punxsy did not, however.

The Gremlins defense had a lot to do with that as they sacked Chucks' quarterback Ryan Jones four times and held Punxsutawney to one yard rushing and 76 total yards of offense.

Jones was picked off twice, once by Stitt and again by Chandler Turner.

“Their quarterback has a rifle for an arm and he can run,” Conto said. “We were concerned about that. Our guys were where they needed to most of the time and he only took off running once. The rest of the time we bottled him up.”

Meanwhile, even Karns City's backups produced 13 points in the second half.

Aaron Hutchison rushed for 49 yards and capped the scoring with a 2-yard TD run late.

“I thought all of our kids ran the ball really well tonight, even the backups when they came in,” Conto said. “Another thing I was pleased with was they threw about four different defenses at us and we picked things up. Last week, we weren't doing that.”
