SR girls shock Warren, 5-2

Samantha Harriett spent most of this season on defense for the Slippery Rock High girls soccer team.

A move of the speedy freshman to offense was designed to give the struggling Rockets' offense a spark.

Mission accomplished.

Harriett scored two goals against Warren Thursday as 12th-seeded Slippery Rock upset the heavily favored Dragons 5-2 in the first round of the District 10 Class AA playoffs.

“She has a lot of speed and physicality,” said Slippery Rock coach Melanie Roczko. “And she has a heck of a foot on her. We put her up top because she knows how to put the ball in the net and that was something we struggled with this year.”

Lily Weitzel also scored a pair of goals and Brooke Campbell also found the net for the Rockets, who won just five games in the regular season.

“We talked a little bit about how we belonged in the playoffs,” Roczko said. “Nothing like showing that on the scoreboard.”

It's the first playoff win for the girls soccer team at Slippery Rock since 2012 when the Rockets pulled off another first-round upset of Harbor Creek.

Slippery Rock (6-12) will play Hickory (15-2-2) Monday at a site and time to be determined.

Grove City 4, Corry 0 — The Eagles (10-6-2) move on in the District 10 Class AA playoffs and will play Harbor Creek (17-2) Monday at a site and time to be determined.
