Pollock, Gremlins win big

Soccer forward sets program's assist mark in 15-0 playoff romp

KARNS CITY — Wednesday’s District 9 Class A boys soccer playoff game between Clarion-Limestone and Karns City may have lacked drama, but not personal achievement.

Noah Pollock tallied three assists in Karns City’s 15-0 victory, giving the junior forward a single-season school record of 24.

“I found out that I was getting close a few weeks ago,” he said, “but I tried not to think about it. The most important thing for us is that the ball is going in the net.”

Even so, Pollock took a minute to reflect following the game.

“Getting the record means a lot to me,” he said. “I depend a lot on my teammates because they are the ones who are scoring the goals.”

Pollock has done well in that department as well this season. He scored once Wednesday, giving him 18 goals on the season.

“We used to call him “Garbage Man” because he was always there to get the rebounds,” said Karns City coach Jim Grenninger. “He’s a great kid and an outstanding team player.”

Spenser Myers, another junior forward, scored five times against the Lions, tying him for the team record of goals in a season with 51.

The Gremlins had defeated Clarion-Limestone (6-7) twice during the regular season by a combined score of 22-1. It had been eight days since Karns City (16-1) last played — a 1-0 loss to Freeport Oct. 20.

“We practiced four times since then and went hard twice,” said Grenninger. “It was a lot of drilling, we’re trying to get back to finding space and making runs.”

Also scoring for the Gremlins were Jace Ebbitt (three), Marcus Lantz, Nick Dodds, Kenton Codispot, Marty Koegler, Conrad Snyder and Austin Rumbaugh.

Clarion-Limestone goalkeeper Harrison Porter stopped 18 shots.

Karns City will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Elk County Catholic and Port Allegany. That game was scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed until today because of inclement weather.

“I don’t know much at all about Port Allegany,” admitted Grenninger. “Our first game this season was against ECC and we beat them 6-2. With our speed, we handled them pretty well.”
