Formidable 4 key KC soccer attack

Myers, Pollock, Ebbitt, Snyder all in double figures in goals, assists as Gremlins prepare for D-9 playoffs

KARNS CITY —Spenser Myers constantly reminds himself the power meter doesn’t always need to be dialed to 100 percent when he connects with the soccer ball.

The Karns City junior forward knows everything doesn’t need to be perfect. A shot with less power can be equally as effective.

It’s something Myers has worked on with Blair Gerlach, who coaches for the Northern Steel soccer club and Mars girls team.

“If I am taking a shot and have a ton of time, if I hit it as hard as I can it goes over the net,” Myers said. “It doesn’t need to be 100. It can be 80 percent with better technique and has a better chance of going on frame and scoring a goal.”

Finding the right touch is something Myers and his teammates have become extremely efficient at.

Myers has scored 46 goals for the second-seeded Gremlins, who will host Clarion-Limestone in the first round of the District 9 Class AA playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

Myers, who also has 14 assists, is one of four players — along with Noah Pollock, Jace Ebbitt and Conrad Snyder — who have double figures in both goals and assists.

Karns City coach Jim Grenninger opened things up for Myers this season.

“Last year, I kept him a little bit under rein,” Grenninger said. “After two or three goals I’d cut him off to keep him focused on being a total team player.”

Building a bond is something Myers and his team have excelled at.

It’s made Karns City, which is seeking its second consecutive District 9 crown, dangerous on offense.

Pollock is two assists away from tying the school record with 21 and has recorded 17 goals.

Pollock attributes the success to time served. This group has been playing together for a long time.

“We’re all good friends and know what each other is going to do,” Pollock said. “It’s easy to pick up on what they do and what their traits will be.”

Ebbitt (15 goals, 16 assists) and Snyder (12,17) give the Gremlins a formidable four.

“They play so well off each other,” Grenninger said. “If Spenser sees something, he moves up and Conrad will go back and cover. Spenser goes 110 percent from the front end of the pitch to the back end.”

Karns City’s attack is built around quick passing and trying to create chances.

“It brings more diversity to the offense,” Pollock said. “It’s not just one person doing it. We’re all getting involved in the action and it’s less predictable.”

Myers, who also plays club soccer, is always looking for ways to fine-tune his game.

During games, Myers says things to himself under his breath to try and keep his confidence up.

“Sometimes, I feel as if I don’t live up to what is expected of me, I let everyone down,” Myers said. “I underestimate myself and push myself too hard.”

Grenninger believes this group has a chance to go further than teams he’s had in the past.

The chemistry is there. Karns City just needs everyone to find the right shooting touch during games.

“They constantly work on their game and the one-two touch passing these guys have picked up from Day 1 working together in practice,” Grenninger said. “They are communicating and calling out names when they pass back and forth.”
