Greenville steals win away from SR

Rockets fall 27-22 at home

SLIPPERY ROCK — It looked as if Ryan Lauster's heady play on a botched extra-point snap was going to save the day for the Slippery Rock High football team.

But Greenville had the last hurrah.

Trailing the Rockets 22-21 with a little more than five minutes remaining in the game, the Trojans drove 79 yards on 13 plays, capped by a 6-yard touchdown scramble by quarterback Gage Gladysz to eke out a 27-22 win over Slippery Rock Friday night.

“We like rolling and getting Gage to the corner because he can run it or throw it,” said Greenville coach Brian Herrick. “He just made a great play.”

It was one of many made by both teams in a game the Greenville looked in control of more than once.

The Trojans roared down the field on their first possession, going up 7-0 less than three minutes into the game on a 28-yard scoring pass from Gladysz to Ethan Reiser.

Greenville (2-0, 1-0) then moved ahead 21-7 in the third quarter on a 96-yard touchdown run by Hunter Hause.

But Slippery Rock rallied, scoring on a 1-yard plunge into the end zone by junior quarterback Bailey Mertens and then on a 2-yard run by Ryan Lauster.

On the extra point after the Lauster score, the snap was short and Lauster scooped it up and floated a pass to Trent Porter on the sideline in the end zone for the 2-point conversion for a 22-21 lead.

“It's something we practice every week,” said Slippery Rock coach Travis Sarver. “You have to rep that just in case it happens. They executed that very well.”

Greenville executed well on its final drive, converting a fourth-and-5 at the Slippery Rock 34 and taking advantage of a pass interference call that moved the ball to the Slippery Rock 6 with a little more than a minute remaining.

Gladysz was 4-of-6 passing for 35 yards on the final drive.

“We work on it a lot in the summer,” Herrick said. “We're not really known as a throwing team, but we really do work hard on it. It all starts up front. We had great protection on that final drive and we didn't necessarily have that earlier.”

Slippery Rock (1-1, 0-1) didn't have a chance to launch its own final drive as it fumbled away the ensuing kickoff.

Greenville was able to pick up a first down and run out the clock.

Mertens, who was only 1-of-12 passing, did lead the Rockets with 104 yards on 16 carries.

Lauster rushed for 77 yards on eight carries and Trent Porter gained 82 yards on 10 attempts.

“I told the guys I was proud of them tonight. The effort was there. We didn't play a perfect game, but we were still in a position to win the football game in the fourth quarter,” Sarver said. “I'm proud of them for that. Proud of their effort. The goal is to keep getting better.”
