MTG presents ‘Evita’ at Succop

BUTLER TWP — The Musical Theatre Guild presents “Evita” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Succop Theater at Butler County Community College.

Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for students, and $12 for groups, available at May’s Music Shoppe, the BC3 box office, or online at www.mtgbutler.org.

Comtra opens ‘South Pacific’

CRANBERRY TWP — Comtra Theatre will stage “South Pacific” at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through May 2 at the theater on Route 19. Tickets are $15 at www.comtratheatre.org.

Spring Art Show begins

The reception for the Associated Artists of Butler County Spring Art Show will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at The Art Center, 344 S. Main St.

Awards will be announced at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and the Harmony Hot Haus band will perform.

The show continues through May 22.

Also, there will be a free demonstration of the pottery wheel and glazing techniques by Christy Culp from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 29 in the Pottery Studio. The event is limited to 20 people.

The Art Center is open noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.

BLT schedules ‘Memoirs’

Butler Little Theatre presents “Brighton Beach Memoirs” May 8 to 10 and 12 to 16 at the theater at One Howard St.

The cast includes Greg Crawford, Renee Cuerden, Olivia Drohan, Samantha, Drohan, Jordan Meals, Molly Miller and Cody Nagle. Directing is Bob Dandoy, with Sue Collar and Janet Groger producing.

Curtain is at 8:15 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, and at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Tickets are $10. Members can make reservations April 28 and 29. The public can begin making reservations April 30. Call 724-287-6781.

Painting classes planned

BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Parks and Recreation Department will host Painting in the Park courses at the Alameda Park office, 184 Alameda Park Road.

Mommy and Me Painting for Mother’s Day will be 6 to 8 p.m. May 5 for age 3 and older. A Daddy and Me Painting for Father’s Day will be 6 to 8 p.m. June 9. Either parent can attend either evening.

Arts fest lists musical guests

PITTSBURGH — Ten days of free music and art June 5-14 during the Three Rivers Arts Festival will include performances by Jenny Lewis, Railroad Earth, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in concert with the Pittsburgh Opera and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Visit www.3riversartsfest.org.

SV named best in ceramics

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley was named the best overall ceramics program, out of 10 participating school districts, at the 2015 Standard Ceramics: Suburban Pittsburgh School’s Exhibition on April 9.

The exhibition was judged by Edinboro University professor and ceramicist Lee Rexrode.

The other nine participating high schools included Baldwin-Whitehall, Bethel Park, Chartiers Valley, Deer Lakes, North Allegheny, North Hills, Peters Township, South Allegheny and Trinity.

The title comes with an award of 500 pounds of clay.

Keystone Theater series announced

CRANBERRY TWP — Producing artistic director and former Broadway performer Chris Saunders has announced Keystone State Music Theater’s first professional series to be performed at the Rotary Amphitheater, 111 Ernie Mashuda Drive.

The season, which runs June 12 to July 11, will include “Always … Patsy Cline,” June 12 to 20; original off-Broadway musical “Pinkalicious, The Musical,” June 20 and 21; and Broadway in the Park July 9 to 11 at Cranberry Township Community Days.

WWI series inspires play

SLIPPERY ROCK — Austin Uram, a Slippery Rock University English literature major from Butler, has turned his interest in Welsh fantasy writer Arthur Machen into a student-written play to be presented at 7:30 p.m. April 30 and May 1 at the Old Stone House.

The work is part of the SRU history department’s yearlong series about World War I.

All of the actors are SRU students. The cast includes Terry Thompson, a secondary education major from Cabot; Katie Bohannon, a resort, recreation and hospitality management major from Watson, Lycoming County; and Shannon Green, a communication major from Butler.

Stone House hosts re-enactors

BRADY TWP — The Old Stone House will be the site of “Living History: The 10th Civil War” featuring the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on Saturday.

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. program will include the 10th Pennsylvania, organized in 1994 as part of the activities of the Mercer County Historical Society. The volunteers will dress in period costumes and show visitors customs practiced during the Civil War.

There will also be demonstrations, including firing a cannon, drills and the evolution from recruit to full-fledged soldier.

Admission is a suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per family.

Community band plays

JACKSON TWP — The Harmony-Zelienople Community Band will perform its spring concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at Seneca Valley Intermediate School, 126 Seneca School Road.

Susan Van Arsdale directs the group of about 80 members.

Music will include “Selections from ‘Frozen,’” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” “Italian Polka” and “Proclamation.”

The Slippery Rock University Flute Quartet will perform. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

Music students perform

Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School students and Butler residents Katelin Morrow, a cellist, and Jamie Mager, a violinist, performed at Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh and will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York with the Three Rivers Young People’s Orchestra in June.

Katelin, a senior, is the daughter of Dawn Prosser and Royal Morrow. Jamie, also a senior, is the daughter of Ronald and Ruth Mager.

Talent contest holds registration

FRANKLIN — The Franklin Fine Arts Council will sponsor the sixth annual Taste of Talent vocal competition this summer at Bandstand Park in downtown Franklin.

The competition is open to individual soloists age 16 and older.

Registration packets may be submitted through the end of April.

Competitions will be held June 24; July 1, 8, 15 and 22. Semifinals will take place on Aug. 1, and the finals will be Aug. 2.
