Rockets launched

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Slippery Rock’s softball team needed a bounce-back performance.

Following a pair of losses in a doubleheader Saturday, the Rockets got back on track against Grove City.

Cheyenne Hindman struck out nine batters and Marie Bosch tallied three hits, including a home run, in the Rockets’ 10-1 defeat of the visiting Eagles Tuesday afternoon.

Slippery Rock entered Saturday’s play looking to continue its undefeated season against Lakeview. But because of a scheduling snafu, the Rockets got more than they bargained for.

“We thought we were playing just Lakeview on Saturday,” said Rockets’ coach Dan Hindman, “but Corry showed up at our field, too. We ended up playing both teams and lost 3-1 to Corry and 13-3 to Lakeview.”

The loss to Corry was a Region 5-AAA setback.

“I thought it was good to come back with a rivalry game against Grove City,” Hindman said. “The girls were pumped up for it and we were fortunate to come back with a win.”

Slippery Rock’s standout freshman pitcher Cheyenne Hindman started both contests on Saturday. She pitched the whole game against Corry and lasted into the fourth against Lakeview.

“She had tweaked her elbow in practice last week,” said Dan Hindman. “A few innings into the second game, her arm started bothering her and I decided to take her out. We didn’t want to chance it.”

The Rockets were supposed to play at Freeport Monday, but the game was postponed due to rain.

“I’m not sure if she would have pitched,” added Dan Hindman. “Based on how she told me she was feeling, I probably would have started her, but I’m glad I didn’t have to make that decision. Mother Nature did us a favor. The rest was important.”

Cheyenne Hindman showed no signs of wear and tear against Grove City. She allowed just the one run on four hits.

“It’s a little tender now,” she said of her arm following the win, “but it was fine during the game. We were not mentally prepared to play a region game against Corry on Saturday. It was an all-around better effort today.”

The Rockets (6-2, 1-1) had Eagles’ starting pitcher Maddie Elberty on the ropes early. They managed four hits in the bottom of the first inning, including Bosch’s two-run single that scored Alexis Vogan and Joella Neal.

“The early offense gave us momentum,” Dan Hindman said. “Some of our bigger hitters are getting more comfortable.”

A Grove City fielding error aided Slippery Rock’s two-run third inning. The Eagles (1-6, 1-2) committed five errors in the game.

“Our fielding was strong in a 5-1 win over Conneaut on Saturday and I thought we had turned the corner,” said Grove City coach Dave Gatewood. “At the plate, we watched a lot of pitches today. She (Hindman) did a good job of keeping us off-balance.”

Hope Schnell had a two-run single in the Rockets’ four-run fourth inning, which prompted Gatewood to pull Elberty in favor of Michaela Ferguson.

Bosch hit her home run, a solo shot, in the bottom of the sixth.

Grove City’s lone tally came in the top of the fifth. Hannah Bumbaco tripled and scored on Lauren Wentz’s groundout.
