Sweet redemption

Seneca Valley's Bobby Archey (19) leaps into his teammates' arms after scoring the winning run against North Allegheny on a hit by Corbin Kessler in the 10th inning Wednesday. Tigers catcher Stefen Rozick looks on as the Raiders celebrate.
Kessler's 2-out RBI single in 10th inning lifts Seneca Valley to wild 7-6 win over rival NA

JACKSON TWP — Corbin Kessler missed out on making a clutch play with his glove, but made up for it with his bat.

Seneca Valley's third baseman was unable to handle a blistered shot off the bat of North Allegheny's Dan McCauley in the top of the seventh inning of Wednesday's Section 1-AAAA game at Raider Field. The Tigers scored two runs on the base hit to take a 6-4 lead.

“The ball was hit so hard, I didn't even see it,” said Kessler. “I just tried to get a glove on it. It bounced off my glove and into the outfield.”

The Raiders rallied in the bottom of the inning, scoring a pair to send the game into extra innings.

Three innings later, Kessler found himself at the plate with the winning run at second base and two outs. He lifted a single into shallow center field, scoring courtesy runner Bobby Archey as the Raiders' dugout erupted in celebration of a 7-6, 10-inning win over the rival Tigers.

“It's redemption,” said Kessler. “You can keep your head down or bounce back and help your team win. That's what happened today.”

It was the second straight heart-breaking defeat for NA, which lost 5-4 in nine innings to Butler on Tuesday.

“We've lost some tough ones, but that's what this section is all about,” said NA coach Andy Maddix.

Brady Kress, who took the mound at the start of the eighth inning and earned the win, got things started for the Raiders (3-1, 4-4) in the bottom of the tenth.

He singled with one out before giving way to Archey at first base. Pinch-hitter Corey Laskey walked. Two batters later, Kessler walked to the plate. His game-winning hit was SV's 15th of the game.

“I thought we did a good job at the plate today,” said Raiders' coach Eric Semega. “Some of our hardest hit balls went for outs today, but we're getting the key hits and that's the difference. We're getting them a lot earlier (in the season) than we did last year.”

The final sequence came with NA's Nick Gross on the mound. He had relieved starter Bobby Brown at the start of the fourth inning.

“Nick is normally a starter and we were planning on throwing him (today) against North Hills,” Maddix said. “But we got to the fourth inning today and the score was tied at three and we decided to go after the game that was right in front of us. He pitched great and deserved to win.”

SV had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, but Mike Collins was thrown out at the plate following a base hit by Lane Palmer.

Kress relieved Troy Martin after the latter worked the first seven innings. Kress set the Tigers down in order in the eighth and ninth inning before squeezing out of trouble in the top of the tenth.

With runners at second and third and two outs, Semega elected to intentionally walk Alex Mesaros to load the bases.

Moments later, Kress got Stefen Rozick to pop out to end the threat.

“He did a great job for us, kept NA at bay,” Semega said of Kress. “Even when they got something going, he made the pitches to get out of it.”

The Raiders led 4-3 entering the top of the seventh, but NA rallied with three runs on two hits. Included was Keegan Phillips' single that scored Joe Fitzgerald to tie the game, followed by McCauley's shot off of Kessler's glove.

Staring defeat in the face, the Raiders pulled off a rally of their own in their half of the seventh.

Johnny Brittner walked and Kessler singled to begin the inning. Both later scored when a groundball off the bat of Matt Wagner bounced under the glove of second baseman Liam Dalbow with two outs.

Martin, who struck out seven and walked three in the start for SV, also added a single, two doubles and two runs batted in at the plate.

“We showed a lot of heart today,” Semega said.
