As I edge toward the twilight of my being, I find at first little to be concerned about. But then I ask: "Is it a better life now than when I gave birth to my family, and is their life's future as well-grounded as past generations'?" I have doubt and concern about my country's current policies. It matters not which party is in power, as both have demonstrated ineptness. There's the staggering debt. There's the entitlements that aren't earned but are expected. There's the immigration problem and the expectation of an ease-to-accommodate solution for political reasons. And merrily we go around. To save a fool might be praiseworthy; to sacrifice the many is irresponsible. Or so it seems to me. Bonuses for some and job losses for many must be a major concern. What can be done? Just ask the aspiring politician for the answer. He will offer a number of choices — "as soon as I am elected." Will a vote in November cure anything? Probably not. The idea of "change" two years ago was appealing, yet experience was overlooked entirely. After the election, and the continued remorse I felt regarding my party's choice, I recalled a story about a man who walked with a cane. "It was said that he was a tap-dancer previously, but life's experiences taught him that to walk he must first learn the use of a cane." I wondered why it would take anything less in learning to govern my homeland. Maybe my children's grandchildren will be able to lead the way, and may their government relearn to live within its means, read the Constitution, and also fully understand what the Founding Fathers had in mind.
