Broad Street Elementary’s Boyd receives regional principal honor
Principal Vanessa Boyd has regularly received praise from administrators, teachers and parents for her efforts to engage students and improving the curriculum at Broad Street Elementary School. A recent award highlights those efforts.
Boyd was named principal of the year by the Education Partnership, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that works to fight educational inequities by providing classroom supplies and resources for students and teachers.
The honor recognizes “outstanding school leaders” who demonstrate a commitment to student success, fostering positive school cultures and making a meaningful impact on their school communities, according to the organization’s website.
“With Principal Boyd’s leadership, Broad Street Elementary has continued to provide students with a supportive, engaging and student-centered learning environment,” information posted to the Butler Area School District’s website said. “Her dedication to students, staff and families has helped create a school culture where students are encouraged to grow academically, socially and emotionally.”
The Education Partnership cited Boyd’s efforts to transform Broad Street Elementary into a “collaborative community school” and creating a “vibrant ecosystem where staff, scholars, parents and community partners unite to holistically develop the leaders of tomorrow.”
“A dedicated public servant with years of committed service to education, Vanessa has redefined the role of school leadership through a lens of creativity, support, and radical collaboration,” the Education Partnership’s website said.
The partnership points to Boyd’s focus on the human element in education, including efforts to expand learning opportunities around music, agriculture, “citizenship & leadership” and “vibrant joy.”
In a video accepting the initial nomination for the recognition, Boyd said the reason for the school’s success was the families and community buying in to its mission.
“I have the most fantastic team ever assembled on planet Earth and I have the most amazing scholars and parents and because of them, this acknowledgment, this nomination, just simply says that we are doing the work,” Boyd said. “We are being seen. We’re being heard and I accept this nomination with such pride because it’s not just about me, it’s about the team. It’s about our parents, my scholars and the community.”
In past community engagement meetings with the school board and other public gatherings, Boyd has described her school as more than just a school building, saying it is like a lighthouse: a beacon of hope and safe harbor for students.
“At the core of Vanessa’s leadership is a profound understanding of the human element in education. Her guiding mantra, ’We must treat before we teach,’ reflects her unwavering commitment to meeting the fundamental needs of every scholar first,” the Education Partnership said.
