The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is offering free tax preparation for families and individuals making up to $50,000.

IRS-certified volunteer preparers are available to complete income taxes at the following four locations:

Center for Community Resources, 212-214 S. Main St., Butler

Slippery Rock University, 165 Elm St., Slippery Rock

Cranberry Township Municipal Center, 2525 Rochester Road; and

Armstrong Center for Community Learning, 81 Glade Drive, Kittanning

Appointments can be made for all locations by calling 724-431-3767.

[naviga:h3]Small fire put out at nursing center[/naviga:h3]

CRANBERRY TWP — An air conditioning unit malfunctioned Friday morning, starting a small fire at UPMC Passavant Cranberry Place Skilled Nursing Center on St. Francis Way in Cranberry Township at around 11 a.m.

The fire was quickly put out by UPMC staff, but not before fire, police and medical personnel responded. Cranberry firefighters arrived to make sure the area was safe and to assist in airing out the building.

No one was injured in the incident, but motorists were delayed on Duthil Road south of Route 228.
