Funeral release granted

Justin Enslen
Service today for infant son

BUTLER TWP — A Connoquenessing Township man accused of causing a fatal vehicle collision had permission to leave the Butler County Prison today to attend the funeral of his infant son.

Justin Enslen, 26, has been in prison since he drove his pickup truck into oncoming traffic on Route 68, causing a head-on collision.

Investigators believe Enslen, who allegedly did not have a driver’s license, was impaired by heroin, morphine, methadone, marijuana and a prescription antiseizure drug while driving home from a methadone clinic when the crash occurred.

The oncoming motorist, 52-year-old Mark Bishop of Oakland Township, was killed.

According to court records, Enslen has been in prison since the February collision, which was about four months before his son, Jayden Enslen, was born.

Jayden was 4 months old.

Butler Township Police Chief John Hays said the cause of Jayden’s death is unknown. Police still are investigating, and an autopsy was done Saturday.

However, Hays said the probe is standard procedure for these circumstances. Investigators do not believe the death is suspicious.

Hays said forensic investigators have indicated the baby’s death might have been sudden unexplained infant death. Investigators still are awaiting the results of lab results.

The county coroner’s office refused to comment about the baby’s autopsy.

Both Hays and the baby’s great-grandmother, Patricia Enslen of Evans City, said they were told the baby was ill and was at the hospital within a day of his death as well as a few days earlier.

Hays said the child’s mother, who is identified as Danielle Enslen in the obituary in Monday’s Butler Eagle, was staying temporarily at the Almost Home motel on West New Castle Road with the baby, who slept in a carrier, and some other children.

Police reports identify her as Danielle Rearick. Court records say Daneille and Justin married Dec. 18, 2012.

An emergency call was placed to 911 about 8 a.m. Saturday when someone in another room heard the mother’s screams, Hays said.

The obituary indicates the mother has four other sons and a daughter, but Hays was immediately unsure how many of those children were staying with her at the motel.

Patricia Enslen said she never got to meet her great-grandson, but she was told Justin Enslen saw his child when the mother brought him to visit in the prison.

Attempts to reach the mother were not successful.

Justin Enslen’s defense attorney Terri Schultz said he has previously expressed a desire to be freed from the prison to care for his family.

“He has said, ‘I have a family now. I want to see my son,’” Schultz said.

Schultz successfully asked the court for permission for Enslen to leave the prison to attend the funeral. County Judge Timothy McCune granted the motion, allowing Enslen to leave the prison and go to Geibel Funeral Home in Butler from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. He will be accompanied by a deputy sheriff.

Enslen was set to appear for arraignment today on a separate case where he is accused of smuggling drugs into the prison. His next appearance in the vehicular homicide case is a judicial conference Nov. 13.

Attempts to reach the assistant district attorney who is prosecuting the case and members of Bishop’s family were not successful.
