Gremlins battling injuries

KC playing host to 4A Clearfield

This is one in a series of articles previewing Friday night's high school football gamesKARNS CITY — Injuries are mounting and the playoffs are coming. And Karns City simply moves on, conducting business as usual.“It's been a tough year that way,” Gremlins coach Ed Conto said. “But that happens sometimes. That's football. That's sports.“That's why we do things the way we do them here and prepare a lot of kids. Everybody has to be ready because you don't know what's going to happen.”Karns City (6-3) hosts Clearfield (5-4) in a mutual regular season finale at 7 p.m. Friday at Diehl Stadium. Conto isn't sure who among the injured will be cleared to play in that game.Running back Dalton Beham returned from a sore ankle last week to rush for 68 yards and a touchdown in KC's 33-19 win over Moniteau. But the Gremlins lost receiver Noah Kepple for the season to a knee injury and nose guard Blaine Wilson didn't play because of a calf contusion.Wide receiver-defensive back Erik Pfeifer has been out all year with an injury, but may suit up this week. Defensive back Hunter Rowe has missed two weeks with a concussion and linebacker Trevor Knox remains out as well.“Not having Blaine in there last week hurt us,” Conto admitted. “He's our best lineman and it takes two guys to block him. We missed him (against Moniteau). He's day to day right now.”Tim Janocko is in his 33rd year at Clearfield and sports a 262-107-2 career record. Conto has won 202 games at Karns City. The Bison bring a 5-4 record into this game. They have only six seniors on their roster.“We have great respect for Karns City and the program Ed Conto runs down there,” Janocko said. “We know we're in for a battle and that's what you want going into the playoffs.”Ty Bender leads Clearfield's running attack with 598 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Bison do the bulk of their damage through the air.Junior quarterback Isaac Rumery has completed 124 of 191 passes for 2,043 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Micah Heichel has 33 receptions for 637 yards and eight TDs.“We try to run a balanced offense, but we've thrown the ball with a lot of efficiency,” Janocko said. “We have a young squad and passing's been our best weapon.”Freshman Jake Lezzer has 24 catches for 332 yards and three TDs, junior Spencer Graham 23 for 340 and four TDs, junior Taye Lynch 20 for 357 and five TDs.“They really spread it around and they're hard to defend because of that,” Conto said. “Covering the pass has been a bone of contention for us. That's why I'm glad we're playing them.“An opponent like this will expose our weaknesses. We'll know what we have to work on.”Karns City's passing game rounded into form last week. Anthony Kamenski completed seven of nine passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, The sophomore also rushed for a pair of scores.Brandon Hesidence had three catches for 129 yards and a TD last week.“We play multiple fronts defensively, depending on the opponent,” Janocko said. “Karns City gives you a lot to prepare for.”Linebacker Eli Glass has 65 tackles for the Bison. Cornerback Graham has 63 tackles and Bender has four quarterback sacks.Clearfield defeated KC 35-28 last season in the first meeting between the schools.
