Walker, CV hand Trojans 1st loss of year
ADAMS TWP — Myles Walker simply has the speed.
He will outrun anyone on the field.
His quickness is what helped him to score three touchdowns, three different ways as Central Valley (4-0) defeated North Catholic (2-1) Friday night 35-14 at the Mars Athletic Complex.
“Coming into the season we knew a lot of people were going to be ranked higher than us,” Walker said. “Like today, we continue to fight every week and try to come out on top.”
The junior got his first touchdown off the opening kickoff, taking the ball 90 yards for the first score just 14 seconds into the game.
He followed it up toward the end of the first quarter with a 64-yard touchdown run, followed up by a 21-yard receiving touchdown in the second quarter.
“I think everybody is finding their niche for us,” Central Valley coach Mark Lyons said. “And like Myles, they're ready when their numbers called.”
Walker's first two touchdowns put the Warriors up 14-0 after the first quarter.
Early in the second, the Trojans got on the board off a 16-yard pass from Zach Rocco to Anthony Serventi to cut the lead in half.
The Warriors would respond with a touchdown pass of their own from Ameer Dudley to Walker to take a 21-7 halftime lead.
“Anytime you let up the opening kickoff, that's never good,” North Catholic coach Patrick O'Shea said. “I thought how we responded in the second half would tell us a lot about our team.”
Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the third, but North Catholic couldn't dig themselves out of the hole.
The game was ultimately sealed off a Rocco fumble with 6:14 left in the game, which allowed Central Valley to go down the field and score off a Montel Simms 5-yard touchdown run.
“There were times in the second half when we got the fight back,” O'Shea said. “But ultimately at the end we couldn't put that together, but there was some stuff that will show us down the road what kind of team we are.”
One of those signs was senior quarterback Rocco, who saw plenty of work, especially in the second half, as he went 30 of 46 with for 269 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
“(Rocco) is just so crafty,” Lyons said. “It's hard to pressure him, and it's hard to play coverage and he just knows when to get rid of it. What a good, young quarterback that kid is.”
North Catholic will face another non-conference opponent next week with Derry.
“It's going to be a lot like this game,” O'Shea said. “They're a blue-collar group with a great coaching staff. The Derry game in terms of competing is gigantic for us.”
Next week's game will again be played at the Mars Athletic Complex, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
