Raiders blanked by NA

Seneca Valley managed just 1 hit against Tigers

WEXFORD — Jake Fischbaugh’s last two outings have left just one thing to be desired.

Pizza?

As extra incentive for his pitchers to throw strikes, North Allegheny baseball coach Andy Maddix has offered to buy the Tigers’ entire pitching staff pizza if it finishes a game with no walks.

In a 5-0 win over Butler April 8, Fischbaugh walked one batter in a complete game. He issued two free passes in Friday night’s home game against Seneca Valley.

They were just two blips on the radar in an otherwise masterful performance as Fischbaugh threw a one-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Raiders.

“He was phenomenal tonight,” said Maddix of his ace. “I can’t say enough about him. He competes and he wants the ball.”

The only hit Seneca Valley managed was Corbin Kessler’s infield single in the top of the fourth. Fischbaugh also hit a batter — Tyler Smith in the second inning — giving the Raiders a total of four base runners the entire game.

The Raiders have dropped their last three games — all section contests — by a combined score of 20-3.

“We put the ball in play tonight, but we didn’t barrel it up,” said SV coach Eric Semega. “He (Fischbaugh) did a good job of hitting his spots.”

The Tigers (6-2, 3-1) plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning off of Raider starter Shane Hepner. Jon Dignazio and Bobby Brown both hit RBI singles. Hepner finished the inning, but was replaced by southpaw Corey Greiner at the start of the fourth inning.

The Tigers scored one run off of him thanks to Blake Young’s RBI groundout, but Greiner shut the door on NA after that, finishing the game with three strikeouts and two hits given up in three innings of relief.

The Tigers managed their three runs on seven hits.

“In any other game, I’d take that,” said Semega, “but we are so snake-bitten and struggling right now, every mistake we make is magnified and being taken advantage of.”

Fischbaugh’s complete game featured five strikeouts and just 70 pitches.

“This time of the year, we like getting him a full week of rest,” Maddix said of Fischbaugh. “If we would have pulled him against Butler, we may have thrown him on Wednesday (against Pine-Richland), but we felt the Butler game was close enough to leave him in.

“When our offense gives him a three-run lead like tonight, we feel pretty good about it.”

The Raiders (3-5, 1-3) next play on Monday at home against Butler (5-3, 1-3).

“I have faith in all the guys here,” said SV catcher Mike Collins. “We just need a spark.”
