Warriors rolling
CHERRY TWP — Holly Colosimo will take all the offense she can get.
But on Thursday, she didn't need very much.
Moniteau's junior softball pitcher struck out six, did not walk a batter and surrendered just four singles in a 7-0 shutout of visiting Redbank Valley.
Colosimo's record, like her team's, improved to 11-1 with the victory.
“She warmed up well today,” said Warriors' coach Dan Beebe. “She was hitting her spots and was keeping their hitters guessing. They weren't able to hit anything solid.”
Moniteau totaled six of its runs in the first two frames.
In the bottom of the first, Chloe Eshenbaugh reached on a Bulldog fielding error. Two batters later, Autumn Neff reached in the same manner and Eshenbaugh scored for a 1-0 lead.
With two outs, Kaitlyn Patton's single was followed by a two-run base hit off the bat of Mackenzie Maples.
Another miscue by the Bulldogs proved costly in the second inning.
Sydney Boben walked and moved to third base on an errant pick-off attempt. She scored on Eshenbaugh's infield single.
Heather McMillen also reached via a base hit, followed by Patton's two-run double.
“Making the other team pay for its mistakes is something we stress,” said Beebe. “In our last game (a 5-4 win over Clarion-Limestone May 5), we were up 3-0 after two innings, but had stranded five runners. We need to take advantage of those opportunities.”
Redbank Valley did not commit another error the rest of the game, but the damage was done.
“We knew this was going to be a tough game,” said RV coach John Sayers. “Our defense is usually reliable. You can't make that many errors and expect to win.”
Meanwhile, Colosimo was taking care of business in the circle for the Warriors.
She allowed two baserunners in the first three innings combined. One of those came on a fielding error in the second frame.
The Bulldogs (6-4) got the first two runners on in the fourth inning — Kate Brothers on another error and Richele Miller singled.
But the rally fizzled thanks to a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a foulout.
Facing runners on the corners with two outs in the next inning, Colosimo got Brothers to pop out to end that threat.
“I was able to mix speeds today,” said Colosimo. “My changeup usually doesn't work too well, but it was working today.”
The final run of the game came when Emily Hiwiller launched a pitch over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the sixth.
Colosimo retired the Bulldogs in order in both the sixth and seventh.
