Knoch adding 5 to HOF
JEFFERSON TWP — The Knoch High School Sports Hall of Fame will induct its fourth class Sept. 14, the night of the Knights' first home football game.
Knoch hosts Highlands at 7 p.m. that evening.
The 2018 induction class includes Knoch graduates Fred Rothen, Carla Wetzel Patarini, Tammie Kelley, Todd Durand and Nick Reiser, along with the Knights' 1978 WPIAL Class AA championship football team.
The 1978 squad becomes the first team to gain induction into the Knoch Sports Hall of Fame. That team finished 11-1, recorded five shutouts and upset Beaver Falls, 40-15, in the WPIAL title game at Pitt Stadium.
That same Knoch squad, coached by Tim Karrs, was inducted into the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame last spring.
Here is a brief look at the 2018 individual inductees:
Fred RothenA 1969 Knoch graduate, Rothen — who died in 2011 — was the first Knight basketball player to score 1,000 points in a career. His 1,079 career points rank fifth on Knoch's all-time scoring list today.A three-year starter, he was the leading scorer on a team that reeled off three straight Class 16-B championships and a school-record 23 wins in a row.
Carla Wetzel PatariniA 1978 Knoch graduate, she was a volleyball and basketball standout.Serving as co-captain of the Knoch volleyball team in 1977 and 1978, Wetzel Pataraini led the team to section titles both years. She was a starting point guard in basketball and went on to earn a school-record 11 varsity letters at Grove City College.
Tammie KelleyA 1983 Knoch graduate, Kelley competed in three sports in high school and was the Knights' first female athlete to qualify for the state track meet in two events.She was voted most athletic in her graduating class and accepted a track scholarship to Slippery Rock University, where she was ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II heptathlon.
Todd DurandA 1983 Knoch graduate, Durand was another three-sport athlete. He earned eight varsity letters in football, basketball and track.Durand served as captain of the football and basketball teams, went on to play football and basketball at Slippery Rock University, and became a longtime high school coach in football, girls basketball and track.
Nick ReiserA 1993 Knoch graduate, Reiser was co-captain of the Knights' 1992 WPIAL runner-up football team and made all-conference in basketball.He was all-conferenceduring all four years of his football career at Allegheny College and was named to the NCAC All-Decade team.
