Losing its grip
BUTLER TWP — Things turned ugly in a hurry for the Butler wrestling team.
Leading Pine-Richland 12-7 after six matches, the Golden Tornado wound up on the short end of five consecutive pins.
That run gave the Rams a 37-12 edge and they went on to claim a 37-28 win Wednesday night at Butler Intermediate High School.
The Rams' streak of pins began with the 171-pound bout and ended with the contest at 103.
Two of those matches proved to be bitter pills for the Tornado.
At 171, Butler's Jake Lytle led Pine-Richland's Ryan Bateman 8-2 in the second period, but Bateman managed a pin 2:47 into the bout.
Then, Jordan Emrick had a 10-2 advantage in the 189-pound match after one period, but he fell to P-R's Tom Martinelli with 19 seconds remaining in the second period.
"You just cannot get pinned in those situations," said Butler coach Scott Stoner.
"If we get decisions in those two bouts, that's six points for us instead of 12 points for them," he added. "Do the math. We would have won."
Pine-Richland coach Tom McGarrity's perspective focused on his team's perseverance.
"The kids didn't quit tonight," he said. "That was the third time this season that (Bateman) has been down big before getting a pin. My kids wrestled like they wanted to win tonight."
The Tornado put together a nice string of their own earlier in the match.
After losing the opening match at 130 pounds, Butler won four of the next five, which included decisions by Derrick Hays (135 pounds), Alex Evanoff (145), Josh Pascazi (152) and Lee Will (160).
Will's 11-10 victory over Pine-Richland's John Schoeffel proved to be the best contest of the evening.
Schoeffel managed a takedown just seven seconds into the bout and led 5-0 after 50 seconds.
But Will retaliated with an escape, a takedown and three back points to lead 6-5 after two minutes and 9-7 entering the final period.
Another escape pushed Will's lead to 10-7 before Schoeffel took him down with 34 seconds left, though Will held on for the win.
The evening's final bout saw Butler junior Ian McLaughlin inch closer to the 100-career win milestone with a pin of P-R's Aaron Halaja with 58 seconds left in the second period of the 125-pound meeting.
The loss drops Butler's record to 1-1.
"Our intensity is not close to where it needs to be in the practice room or out here in the matches," said Stoner. "Mistakes killed us tonight."
Butler's junior high team won 51-41, moving its record to 6-1.
