Slow start doesn't worry Tornado
KITTANNING — Two games, two losses — and no panic from new Butler girls basketball game Joe Lewandowski.
In fact, quite the opposite.
“Our goal is to get a little better each day and we're doing that,” Lewandowski said after Saturday's 52-43 loss to Deer Lakes in the consolation game of the Armstrong Tip-Off Tournament. “I'm loving the effort we're getting out of these girls.”
The Golden Tornado were plagued by 26 turnovers against Deer Lakes' pressure defense and struggled at the free throw line for the second successive day.
After sinking 10 of 19 free throws Friday, Butler sank 11 of 23 Saturday. Kailey Olenick sank six of seven foul shots in the fourth quarter. Besides her, Butler was 5 of 16 at the line.
“That's something we have to work on,” Lewandowski said of the foul shooting. “But we're getting to the line and that's a good thing. We played more aggressively today.”
The Lancers put the game away at the line, sinking six free throws in the final 1:24. Cassidy Chmura and Jessica Philistine were both 4-of-4 at the stripe in the fourth period.
Butler's last lead was at 12-11 midway through the second quarter. The Lancers scored the final six points of the half — two on lay-ups by Philistine — and never trailed in the second half.
Dave Petruska, son of Mars coach Dana Petruska, took over the Deer Lakes reins from his mother this season.
“I have a lot of the same philosophies she does, but I do want us to press more and play more up-tempo,” Petruska said. “We were able to get that going today.
“A lot of our points came in transition after turnovers. We want to score a lot that way.”
Lewandowski said that “we're not totally organized on our press-break yet, but that will come. Things will come together. Right now, we just want to work hard and be good teammates.”
Olenick paced Butler with 14 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of assists. Jenna Kunst contributed nine points, seven rebounds and four steals, Tiana Schaffner six points and five boards.
“Kailey and Jenna both had excellent games,” Lewandowski said.
Freshman Julia Gibson was productive off the bench for the second straight game, scoring seven points. Melea Barlow had four steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Mackenzie Kacsur paced Deer Lakes with 14 points, five rebounds and five steals. Philistine had 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals, Chmura 11 points and five rebounds.
