Mars' Schade top USHL selection
Carter Schade has already made a name for himself in the world of junior hockey.
Now his name is at the top of the list.
The 16-year-old Mars native was the first overall pick Monday by the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League draft.
A member of the Penguins Elite youth hockey program, he’s the first western Pennsylvania player to be drafted No. 1 overall by the league.
“I’m honored and blessed to be drafted by such a great organization,” Schade tweeted after he was drafted. “This wouldn’t be possible without the Pittsburgh Pens Elite and all of the coaches who helped me along the way.”
The 5-foot-10 defensman had seven goals and 15 points in 33 games with Penguins Elite.
The USHL is considered the top junior hockey league in the United States.
In April, Schade was also selected by the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League, one of the premiere junior leagues in Canada.
Schade has already committed to Penn State University.
