Both men injured in Saturday’s barn blaze at Fantasy Whitetails, a deer farm, are at home and recovering.

Aaron Sloboda, 41, suffered smoke inhalation while trying to salvage farm equipment from a burning barn during a fire at 8:40 a.m. Saturday at 472 Cemetery Road.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was put on oxygen and given medication.

“They said the diagnosis was, if you would have compared it to a sunburn it would have been a very severe sunburn to his lungs,” said Rocco Sloboda, Aaron’s father.

Rocco Sloboda suffered burns to his right arm during the fire. He went to an urgent care facility, where his burns were treated, scrubbed and wrapped.

Aaron Sloboda is taking medication through a breathing apparatus.

“(The doctors) said it would take a while, but he seems to be doing OK,” said Darlene Sloboda, Aaron’s mother. “He’s still coughing, but they said that’s to be expected.”

Rocco Sloboda is treating his burns with a cream and keeping his arm wrapped.

The fire destroyed the barn. Heat from the flames caused smoldering to the siding of the Slobodas’ house, which is near the barn.

Teams of firefighters from several departments arrived and prevented further damage to the house, while extinguishing most of the barn fire within about 15 minutes.

The investigation was turned over to the Butler State Police fire marshal.

Rocco Sloboda was told by the fire marshal that an official cause has not yet been determined, but that there were four electrical appliances on the back wall where the fire started and two others in the adjacent corner.

Most of the equipment inside the barn was destroyed, including corn planters, tools, plows and a restored 1971 Oldsmobile. Darlene Sloboda said she did not know the total cost of the damage.

Some of the equipment was salvaged, including a tractor. Three deer, who were trapped in fenced-in overhangs connected to the barn, were saved from the fire by Aaron and Rocco Sloboda, who cut the fence open to allow them to escape.

Two other deer died in the fire, and Rocco Sloboda said one of the deer that was saved might die from injuries from the fire.
