Caretaker charged with theft

She allegedly stole money

EAST BRADY — A caretaker is facing felony charges after she allegedly stole money from an elderly client.

Dixie Parisi, 61, of Karns City is charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and theft by unlawful taking, and one count of theft by deception.

The Clarion County Sheriff filed the charges Aug. 13.

Parisi was hired to take care of Agnes Lewis, 92, of East Brady in her East Third Street home. She worked for the woman for about five years.

During that time, large sums of cash were in Lewis’ bedroom dresser. Parisi allegedly took that money and told Lewis she would keep it at her house for “safe keeping,” according to the criminal complaint. The complaint did not list the amount of money believed to be taken.

Lewis repeatedly asked Parisi to return the money, but Parisi would give her excuses and not return it, the complaint said.

Eventually Parisi convinced Lewis to give her power of attorney. Parisi later attempted to take Lewis’ car and to move her into Parisi’s home.

The Clarion County Office of Aging was notified and Lewis was taken to a hospital for treatment and then moved in July to the Country Springs nursing home in Sligo, where she is today.

Lewis told police that Parisi has her checkbook and diamond rings and won’t return them.

During an investigation, an office of aging caseworker discovered Parisi wrote three checks to herself without permission from Lewis. The office of aging also discovered Parisi cashed pension checks for Lewis from May through July of 2013.

Parisi told the office of aging she had already spent that money but attempted to pay back the money in September of that year.

The checks were valued at more than $3,100.

An officer spoke with Parisi on June 30. At that time, Parisi told the officer she still had $1,800.

Parisi has a preliminary arraignment on Wednesday at the New Bethlehem, Clarion County, district judge office.
