Golfers move on

Freeport's VanDruff medalist during WPIAL section qualifier Wednesday

Freeport's Richard VanDruff earned medalist honors with a 76 during the WPIAL Section 3-AA golf qualifier Wednesday at Longue Vue Golf Club.

The Yellowjackets' Cole Hepler also advanced by shooting an 86, good for fifth place.

Freeport's Audrey Clawson finished second in the girls section qualifier at Kittanning Country Club.

In the Section 8-AAA qualifier at Saxon Golf Course, five area golfers advanced. Stefan Carlsson of Knoch finished third with a 75, Mars' Josh Bartley fourth with a 76, Knoch's Chris Kier fifth with a 77.

Ben Mullins of Mars was seventh with a 78, Knoch's Austin Miller eighth with a 79.

In 3-AAA action at Pheasant Ridge, Seneca Valley's Blake Miller (tied for fourth, 78) and Evan Hangliter (ninth, 80) both advanced.

The WPIAL semifinals will take place Tuesday at sites to be determined.

Girls VolleyballKnoch 3, Deer Lakes 0 — Mary Zellhart had 14 service points and Celina Sanks 12 kills as the Knights (5-2, 4-1) won by scores of 25-10, 25-17, 25-11.Knoch travels to Bishop Canevin Saturday.Mars 3, Burrell 0 — Jaden Zimmer and Abby Matusik had 16 and 10 kills, respectively to lead the Planets.Mars also received six blocks from Kelsey Bruce, 32 assists from Katie King and 11 digs from Mel Dinderman.
