Rock basketball team cruises, 113-72
SLIPPERY ROCK — A one-day hangover? Kevin Reynolds doesn’t want to hear about it.
The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball coach was displeased with his team’s defensive effort in Sunday’s 113-72 win over outmanned Ohio University-Eastern Sunday at Morrow Field House.
The victory came a day after The Rock (5-1, 2-0) posted a 74-55 road win at California (Pa.).
“Obviously, giving up 72 points is too many in a game like this,” Reynolds said. “Our defensive intensity wasn’t there and that was disappointing.
“We allowed 19 points in the first half at Cal, then come home and give up 38 in the first half? That can’t happen.”
Even OU-Eastern coach Don Madzia was surprised by his Panthers’ offensive output.
“I had our over-under at 55 today,” the coach joked. “We did some nice things. We shot the ball well.”
Not that the game was ever in any kind of doubt.
The Rock had a 17-2 lead less than four minutes into the contest and took a 71-38 advantage into halftime.
The 71 points matched a school record for most points scored in one half of basketball. SRU scored 71 points in a half on Jan. 11, 1971, against Geneva. The school record for points in a game is 127, set Nov. 23, 2008, vs. Ohio State-Mansfield.
That record could have been threatened Sunday.
“Kevin is good to us that way,” Madzia said. “He plays his second unit quite a bit against us.”
Such is Reynolds’ purpose in playing this game. The Rock is 8-0 against OU-Eastern in a series that began in 2008, winning by the average margin of 104-60.
“This is a game where we can get our backups extended minutes on the court,” Reynolds said. “That’s important if a front-liner ever goes down to an injury or a situation arises where we unexpectedly need to give a reserve player a lot of minutes.
“We purposely scheduled this game for the day after the Cal game. We have to travel to Shippensburg and Millersville for back-to-back games later on (Jan. 3-4) and this will be what that’s like.”
Erik Raleigh, a 6-foot--8 sophomore forward, paced SRU with 29 points and added 10 rebounds. He sank 13 of 20 shots from the floor and played 23 minutes.
“It’s probably been a long time since he’s taken 20 shots in a game,” Reynolds said.
Jordan Grady contributed 16 points and 13 boards in 32 minutes. Matej Delinac had 14 points and four assists in 28 minutes, Kenny Moore five assists in 28 minutes.
None of those players are starters. SRU’s starting lineup was only on the floor for the first eight minutes.
“Our starting lineup is intact. We’re working on depth right now. We’ve always had that and that’s important,” Reynolds said.
Brandt Thieman and Devin Ward scored 16 points each for the Panthers (1-5), who were outrebounded 57-23.
In Saturday’s win at California, Josh Martin scored 20 points and Kelvin Dixon 16. The Rock sank only 3 of 11 3-pointers that night, but struck for 15 treys out of 33 tries Sunday.
California 79, SRU (women) 52 — The Rock (0-5, 0-2) scored just five points in the final 10:23 Saturday as the Vulcans (1-4, 1-1) pulled away.
D’Asia Chambers paced SRU with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Aiden Geise added 11 points and six boards.
Jazmyne Frost, SRU’s top scorer, was limited to eight points and four rebounds.
Both SRU teams return to action Saturday. The men host Lake Erie at 3 p.m. while the women travel to Lourdes.
