The scramble at the Butler County Bureau of Elections will continue each year until voting centers are instituted.

At their Wednesday meeting, the county commissioners approved a request by Shari Brewer, director of the Elections Bureau, to move the Fairview Borough polling place back to the borough building.

Brewer said she did not have enough poll workers last year to cover the elections at the borough building, so both the borough and Fairview Township elections were held at the township building.

Normally, Brewer must move one or two polling places each year for a variety of reasons.

Last year, the Brady Township poll was moved from the community center back to the township building, and Allegheny Township's was moved to a larger building beside the township building.

“It's a constant issue, moving polling site locations,” Brewer said.

She is currently looking for a site in Buffalo Township's third precinct, as the former polling place contains a day care and prefers not to have a poll in the building.

On Thursday, Brewer searched online maps and other sources to try to find a place for the 1,502 voters in that precinct to vote.

“This is a prime example of why voting centers would be more efficient for everyone,” said Brewer, who wants to move all voting to school district buildings.

Such a move would cut in half the number of poll workers needed in each election, negate the need to outfit polling places to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and relieve Brewer of the necessity of inspecting each polling place every year to check door handles, railings, stairs, slopes and other potential safety issues.

“Voting centers would be a huge plus in addition to how much money the county would save,” Brewer said.
