County receives taxes for small boroughs
Because no one runs for tax collector and most write-in candidates turn the job down, the county treasurer is serving as the tax collector for four small boroughs.
Diane Marburger said she is collecting taxes for Valencia, West Sunbury, Callery and Connoquenessing.
“I act as the tax collector for those residents, and I collect the county tax plus the municipal tax,” Marburger said.
She said during an election, there is often no candidate for borough tax collector.
If a name is written in, that person usually turns the job down when they discover they would be required to attend classes and become certified at their own expense.
At Wednesday's county commissioners meeting, Marburger asked the board to approve charging taxpayers $5 for duplicate tax cards. In most instances, the card was lost by the taxpayer, Marburger explained.
The commissioners approved her request.
Unlike the case for municipal tax collectors who earn that extra $5 for themselves, the $5 fee for duplicate cards in those four boroughs will go into the county's general fund.
“In my case, the county's getting it,” Marburger said. “I'm not getting it.”
