Dining out: Owners aim for new event
Butler residents will likely be able to enjoy food, drinks and music one Friday each month on Main Street from July through October.
Community business owners are working to hold “Foodie Fridays” in the Peoples Gas parking lot on the corner of Main and North streets, as well as on the streets surrounding Diamond Park.
Reclamation Brewing Co., Butler Brew Works, Chop Shop and Cummings Coffee & Candy will participate.
“Ideally we're looking to continue to try and drive traffic downtown,” said Nick Fazzoni, co-owner of Butler Brew Works. “There's a lot of new businesses that have happened, and I think recently you've seen a handful of people try to build the level of community down here.”
Foodie Fridays have been tentatively scheduled for July 28, Aug. 25, Sept. 29 and Oct. 13. The events will feature outdoor vendors selling food and drinks, including alcohol. There also will be live music.
Barry Cummings, owner of Cummings Coffee & Candy, said he is aiming to book acoustic musicians, as well as a rock band and violinists or cellists.
“We'd like to appeal to all kinds of people, so by getting some different genres of music hopefully we can accomplish that,” he said.
Chop Shop will sell food during the event. The businesses plan to invite food trucks to the events, and people can attend Foodie Fridays at no charge. The event will be insured by Reclamation Brewing Co.
Ben Smith, co-owner of Reclamation Brewing Co. and mayoral candidate, said the businesses are close to having confirmation from Peoples Gas to use its parking lot and that the businesses will get an exhibition permit from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
Whether alcohol will be sold near Diamond Park will depend on the cost. Because it would be sold on public property, the event may need police protection, which would cost the businesses money.
Smith also said if the events do well, it will be started up again in the summer of 2018.
“The foot traffic does a lot for a small city like ours,” he said. “(People) will maybe see some businesses they didn't know were there before. Maybe they'll stop in for a dessert at one of the restaurants.”
Fazzoni said Foodie Fridays is in the best interest of downtown businesses.
“We see any activity downtown as a benefit to our businesses,” he said. “It's additional exposure and we really buy into the mentality that more is better.”
