Karns City wins without starting QB
STRATTANVILLE — Karns City ran wild.
Chandler Turner rushed for 291 yards on just 11 attempts, and the Karns City Gremlins totalled 578 yards on the ground en route to a 45-7 thumping of the Clarion-Limestone Friday night.
“He (Turner) is a good, tough runner,” said Karns City head football coach Ed Conto. “He is good at making a play on his own when he has to.”
Playing without injured starting quarterback Jacob King, the Gremlins used an impressive ground attack to wear down the Lions.
Cullen Williams, who started in place of King at quarterback, completed just one pass, but he didn't need to put the ball in the air with the ground game churning out the yards.
Karns City didn't change its approach on offense despite not having their quarterback.
“We did the same things we've done all year,” Conto said.
After a pretty even first quarter, in which both teams scored one touchdown, Karns City scored 20 unanswered points in the second quarter to break open the game.
Turner, who scored on a 37 yard run in the first quarter, scored on runs of 85 and 70 in the second quarter to spark the Gremlins offense.
Eric Dodd added a 16-yard touchdown run in the second to round out the first half scoring. Dodd finished the game with 93 yards rushing.
Clarion-Limestone dominated the time of possession in the second half, but could not punch it into the endzone.
The Lions had possessions of eight, 10, and 12 plays in the second half, but the Gremlins defense rose to the occasion each time to deny the Lions from adding to their point total.
“We did a lot of things well tonight,” Conto said, “but we still have things to work on. For instance, we had trouble getting off the field on third down tonight.”
Mike Macefe led the rushing attack for Clarion-Limestone, gaining 149 yards on the ground in the losing effort.
Turner added his fourth touchdown of the game in the third quarter, while Kaiden Powers, who rushed for 129 yards on just four carries, scored on runs of 64 and 50 in the second half.
