A Butler man admitted he downloaded child pornography videos onto his home computer last year, authorities said.

State police Wednesday arrested John P. Doerr III, 31, in a case that began with an undercover investigation into the Internet sharing of child pornography, according to court documents.

Doerr was arraigned on six counts of dissemination of photographs, videotapes, computer depictions and films depicting children engaged in sex acts, 35 counts of possession of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility, all felonies.

He subsequently waived his preliminary hearing and was released on his own recognizance.

Doerr’s attorney, Michael Pawk, accompanied him at Wednesday’s court proceedings. Pawk declined to comment about the case Thursday.

The charges culminated the investigation by the police computer crime unit that included the execution of a search warrant Oct. 16 at the defendant’s home.

Earlier, police said, an investigator went online to identify those sharing and possessing child pornography using the BitTorrent file-sharing network.

Police during the search seized a computer tower belonging to Doerr. They interviewed him that same day.

He “confessed to downloading multiple child pornography videos” onto the computer, according to a police affidavit.

Doerr, whose father is a Butler County judge, acknowledged that he “did intentionally search for, download and view child pornography using his computer tower,” the affidavit said.

His next scheduled court date is his formal arraignment March 12 in Butler County court.
