NEW ORLEANS — Slippery Rock University students David Reinhardt, Tyler Kachelries, Morgan Elliot, Jordan Pacheco, Cody Colagrande, Trevor Miller and Billy Martin were named to the Division II Atlantic Regional all-regional track and field team Tuesday.

Reinhardt (javelin and discus), Kachelries (javelin), Paceho (javelin), Miller (shotput) and Martin (hammer toss) are all throwers.

Colagrande reached the mark in the pole vault, while Elliott was chosen for the 1,500-meter run.

NEW ORLEANS — Butler High School graduate Ava Bonetti earned All-Atlantic Regional honors in the shot put and discus to lead a Slippery Rock University women's track and field team that placed nine women on the team in 11 events.Bonetti has the third best throw in the region in the shot put (12.86 meters) and the discus (41.55 meters).Also named to the team were Sabrina Anderson (heptathlon and high jump), Julia Cain (pole vault), Sam Taylor (javelin), Jenny Picot (5,000 run), Ashley West (high jump), Janine Powis (800 run) and Brittany Christiansen (hammer throw).

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has a significant tear in his right elbow and the team doctor has recommended season-ending Tommy John surgery.Team president Michael Hill made the announcement in the Dodger Stadium press box during Tuesday night's game against Los Angeles.The 21-year-old Fernandez is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in eight starts. Last season's NL Rookie of the Year was examined Tuesday by Marlins team physician Lee Kaplan in Florida.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Alex Bregman and Tyler Moore each hit grand slams and drove in eight runs, and five LSU pitchers combined on a six-inning no-hitter as the Tigers routed Northwestern State 27-0 on Tuesday night.It was the largest margin of victory in LSU's storied baseball history — and could have been bigger if the game hadn't been called because of lightning in the area with two outs and two runners on in the sixth for the Tigers.

MANKATO, Minn. — Rutgers announced Tuesday that it has dismissed quarterback Philip Nelson from its football program after he was charged in connection with an assault that left another man critically injured in Minnesota.
