SR budget balanced for 2014

Council ready for public input

SLIPPERY ROCK — The 2014 borough budget is balanced and ready for public input.

The $1.1 million budget will have a property tax rate of 21.875 mills, the same rate as this year. A mill generates $1 in tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value.

Borough council voted Tuesday evening to advertise the budget for public review.

Councilman Jerry Heller said new items in the budget include two new part-time workers, one to do accounting work and the other for the streets department, and two part-time police officers. Money also will be allocated to improve the borough’s website.

Several line items were changed to help pay for the new items, including paying for a new police cruiser using savings rather than a loan and keeping the solid waste service fee at $3.

Council Vice President Christy Tichy said the budget fulfilled council’s wishes.

Councilman Itzi Meztli said the solid waste service fee should have been cut to $1.50, as it was in the original budget Heller presented and as the borough’s solid waste committee recommended.

The budget will be open for public review Nov. 25 and council will take a final vote on the budget Dec. 10.

The current budget is $1.2 million with the same tax rate.
