Samaritans help rollover victims

The Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service assist city police at the scene of a rollover crash about 11:20 a.m. Sunday on Peppperland Boulevard off Route 8 South. Three women were riding in the Chevrolet Trax that rolled onto its driver's side. At least two of the women suffered apparent minor injuries, according to witnesses. A police report was not immediately available.

Butler police are investigating a rollover crash Sunday morning on Pepperland Boulevard that briefly trapped three women in a sport utility vehicle, authorities said.

Two good Samaritans stopped and helped the driver and two passengers from the overturned Chevrolet Trax following the wreck about 11:20 a.m. At least two of the occupants appeared to have minor injuries, witnesses said.

Butler police later placed two of the woman in handcuffs, but it was not clear why. An accident report was not immediately available, and police declined comment about the investigation.

One of the two men who stopped to help the occupants of the SUV said the vehicle passed him traveling north on Route 8 South near Hansen Avenue. He did not want to give his name.

The man said about that same time a speeding Ford F-250 pickup truck, with Ohio license plates, passed him, too. He didn't know if the truck was chasing the SUV.

Moments earlier, he had seen the same two vehicles as well as a van at a light in front of the Greater Butler Mart on Route 8 south in Butler Township.

He described seeing a man get out of the pickup and start “pointing and shouting,” possibly at the occupants of one of the other vehicles.

“It looked like it was some sort of a heated argument,” the man said.

The good Samaritan said that when he stopped to help after seeing the SUV on its driver's side, he found another motorist already there. They “helped pull (the women) out,” he said.

One of the women had superficial cuts on her knee, he said, and another had a superficial cut on her finger.

The three women, following the wreck on Pepperland Boulevard, didn't say much, if anything, after their rescue.

“They were more worried about trying to get back into the vehicle,” he said. “They wanted to get back into the vehicle.”

“They didn't want out (of the vehicle),” said the other man who stopped to help.

The Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service assisted at the scene. The damaged SUV was later towed away.
