Police chase stolen car across 2 states

Bedford County man held in Mercer County

A Bedford County man remains behind bars after leading police on a chase through five counties over two states in a stolen car.

Justin A. Weidner, 31, of New Enterprise was arrested Thursday following the more than 40-mile pursuit that began in Ohio and ended near Emlenton in Venango County.

But before Weidner was taken into custody, police said, troopers had to forcibly bring the car he was driving to a stop, and then chase him down on foot.

He was later arraigned on a felony charge of receiving stolen property, and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is in the Mercer County Prison on $75,000 bond while awaiting a preliminary hearing tentatively set April 27.

Authorities said the chase started Thursday after police in Niles, Ohio, ran a license plate on the car that Weidner was driving, and learned it was previously reported stolen out of Pennsylvania.

Officers tried to make a traffic stop, police said, but the suspect failed to pull over, and sped away, traveling east on Interstate 80 into Pennsylvania.

State police and Shenango Township police in Mercer County took over the pursuit. During the chase, authorities said, Weidner allegedly drove recklessly and at one point drove the wrong way on the interstate.

Police finally ended the chase by performing a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT maneuver, just east of Emlenton. The maneuver requires the officer to nudge the back of the evading vehicle, causing it to spin out and stop.

But Weidner managed to get out of the car and made a run for it, police said. Troopers, however, caught up to and nabbed him.

Participating in the chase were Niles police and the Ohio Highway Patrol, as well as Shenango Township police and troopers from the Mercer, Venango and Clarion stations.
