ZELIENOPLE — A borough woman is in custody after attempting to escape police after being arrested for driving under the influence Sunday night.

Amy Gordon, 28, is charged with driving under the influence, traffic violations and escape from custody. She is in Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Arresting officer Michael Kopp first saw Gordon and a male passenger leave a gas station where he was parked.

“As the van passed me a witness who had a better view of them that I did stated they appeared to be highly under the influence of something and shouldn’t be driving,” Kopp wrote in his report.

Kopp began following them, noting several traffic violations and erratic driving patterns along the way, documents say.

He also observed Gordon failing to signal a turn, running a stop sign and jerkily accelerating and decelerating at stop lights, documents say.

Eventually, Gordon returned to the gas station where the incident began.

Kopp pulled the van over and approached the driver, and smelled alcohol coming from the vehicle, according to court documents.

He asked Gordon for her license, and after looking for it she told Kopp her boyfriend had left with it and that she was “drunk,” documents say. Kopp then had Gordon exit the vehicle and take three sobriety tests, two of which showed signs of impairment.

Police then took her to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for a blood draw.

At the hospital, Gordon began to become belligerent, Kopp said, yelling at officers and kicking the wall. She refused to have blood drawn and was taken to a holding cell where she continued to be belligerent, documents say.

Before being transported to Butler County Prison, Kopp said Gordon asked to use the bathroom and attempted to escape.

“After using the bathroom, she ran to the back door and pushed the panic hardware and went out of the back door of the police station in an attempt to flee from going to jail,” Kopp said. “I was able to catch Amy just outside of the doorway and brought back into the station and placed into the holding cell.”

Gordon has a preliminary hearing set for June 12.
