Butler joins playoffs

Sam Horne scored off a pass from John Fleming with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime as Butler’s boys soccer team clinched a WPIAL Class AAA playoff berth with a 4-3 victory at Hampton Tuesday night.

The Golden Tornado’s first three goals were credited to Anthony Werth, Steven Benson and Cassian Widenhofer, the last of those tying the game at three with less than a minute left in regulation.

Matt Huey added an assist for Butler (9-5, 7-3), which had dropped a 4-1 decision to Hampton Sept. 19.

Slippery Rock 7, Franklin 2 — Josh Stutz scored three goals and Josh Jones added two goals and two assists to lift the Rockets (8-4-2, 4-1-2).

Ben Magliocca and Nate Popejoy both added a goal for the Rockets while Mark Cessar, Marty Doyle, Chase Baxa and Luc LaChance each contributed an assist.

Mars 7, Freeport 0 — The Planets improved to 11-5 overall and 7-4 in the section with this win over the Yellowjackets (4-11-1, 2-8-1). No other details were available.

Seneca Valley 2, North Allegheny 0 — The Raiders (12-1-1, 10-0) remained perfect in section play.

Cross CountryFreeport’s Hayley Davis placed first overall with a time of 20 minutes and 11 seconds as the Yellowjackets (6-1) defeated Greensburg Central Catholic (19-40) and Southmoreland (19-44).In the boys’ meet, Freeport (5-2) tallied wins over the Centurions (25-34) and Scotties (26-33). Colin Meehan was second overall at 17:29.
