SLIPPERY ROCK — High School students and teachers will have a chance to immerse themselves in outdoor activities and environmental topics at a four-day camp in June hosted by Slippery Rock University.

The SRU Healthy Planet, Healthy People Environmental Summer Camp and Community Project Incubator is being hosted by the university’s Office of Sustainability and will run from June 20 to 24.

Attendees will participate in lessons on topics that include water and air quality, acid mine drainage mitigation, leadership development, and sustainable food and agriculture impacts.

Paul Scanlon, the university’s director of sustainability, said the camp will be focused on raising environmental awareness among students and teachers.

“The ultimate goal of this project is to initiate and support environmental education and steward community projects across the region,” he said.

The camp is being funded through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, and participating teachers and school districts will receive $1,000 stipends or minigrant funding to implement sustainability projects.

The registration fee for students is $100 to cover room, board and activity fees.
