Woman injured in rollover wreck

Two mailboxes were part of the debris field left behind in a one-car rollover crash shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday on Route 356 in Summit Township. The driver, a 29-year-old woman, was injured in the wreck. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. State police are investigating the crash.

SUMMIT TWP — A 29-year-old woman was injured Wednesday morning when she lost control of her car and hit an embankment, taking out two mail boxes and traveling through landscaping before rolling over on Route 356 in the township, authorities said.

Herman volunteer firefighters had to use a rescue tool to get the woman out of the vehicle following the wreck around 11 a.m. She was later taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries not believed to be serious.

State police are investigating the crash, but they did not immediately release her name. A cause was unknown.

The woman was traveling north on the 100 block of Route 356, also known as Freeport Road, when the Chevrolet Cobalt she was driving hit an embankment on the east side of the road, police said.

The car struck two mail boxes and crossed over the southbound lane. It plowed through landscaping and rolled over at least once, landing on its wheels in a yard. The damaged mailboxes also ended up in the same yard.

East Butler Ambulance tended to the woman in the car. A neck brace was placed on her before firefighters used a hydraulic rescue tool to pop open the driver's door, said Larry Shuler, captain of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company.

The woman was conscious and alert during and after the rescue. She was placed on a stretcher and wheeled to the ambulance.

The wreck reduced traffic to one lane for about 30 minutes before the car, which was badly damaged, was towed away.
