Trojan golf wins section
CRANBERRY TWP — In its attempt for a three-peat, North Catholic's golf team left no doubt.
The Trojans took down Deer Lakes last Wednesday, wrapping up a third straight section title with an undefeated record of 12-0.
“I knew we'd be a solid team, but I am a bit surprised with how consistent we've been,” said North Catholic coach John Haggerty. “Every match, our top five have been good and I am excited about where we're headed.”
North will compete in the WPIAL Class AA team semifinals Oct. 8. They will reach the district championship if they place in the top three.
The team's top averages per nine holes include Madie Smithco (36), Brendan Haggerty (38), Andrew Parker (41), Joey Primyon (42) and Ryan Feczko (42).
Brendan Haggerty was the fifth-best golfer on last year's team with a 41. He has made marked improvement since then, in particular with three clubs.
“My short game has always been there, but between my driver, 3-wood and 4-hybrid, my long game has definitely gotten better,” he said. “I golfed almost every day at Olde Stonewall this summer and that helped.
“We didn't set a goal to go undefeated, just wanted to go out and play our best every match.”
Along with Deer Lakes, North swept Section 3 foes Winchester Thurston, Eden Christian, Summit Academy, Northgate and Vincentian Academy.
The Trojans play home matches at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course, which has strengthened their game.
“It's a challenging course for the kids,” John Haggerty said. “It's so narrow, a very tight course. It forces the kids to focus on hitting certain spots and we've become a more strategic team.
“If you're not accurate off the tee, you're going to struggle,” he added. “We go to courses that are more wide open and it comes as an advantage.”
Smithco, a senior, had reservations about joining the golf team in 2016. Since North does not field a girls team, she had to either golf with the boys or set her clubs aside. Her decision to do the former has benefited her and the program. Along with winning two state individual titles and one WPIAL championship, she has contributed to a 46-3 team record in four seasons.
“I was pretty scared coming in,” Smithco said of her freshman year. “It took me a little time to adjust, but I've enjoyed being part of the team. Coach Haggerty pushes us and makes us better. We all have fun with it.”
