After a one-year hiatus, there will be fireworks again in downtown New Castle this summer.

Disability Options Network, a nonprofit organization that serves people in Western Pennsylvania including Butler County, has taken the helm for the Lawrence County's annual fireworks display.

The newly renamed Fireworks Festival Freedom Fair will be from 4 to 10 p.m. July 14 in New Castle.

The Fireworks Festival was a long-running event that was formerly held by the Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency. The agency withdrew from the event last year, said Shelley McConnell, events coordinator with the Disability Options Network.

Disability Options Network is combining the event with its annual Freedom Fair, an event intended to raise awareness of disability issues and services that are available.

The organization's mission is “empowering people with disabilities to live as independently as they choose,” according to its website. It advocates for disability rights and offers training, peer support and referral services.

The event will feature food vendors, live music by Trainwreck, bouncy houses, jugglers, a make-your-own tie-dye shirt area and will conclude with a Zambelli fireworks display, McConnell said.
