Game of Inches Karns City falls just short in 42-41 OT defeat
KARNS CITY — Ian Thrush was gashing Karns City offensively all night.
It was the play he made on defense that sealed the Gremlins' fate.
Thrush raced from the middle of the field to the left sideline to tackle KC's Hunter Rowe inches from the goal line on a two-point conversion try, handing Brookville a 42-41 District 9 football victory in double overtime Friday night at Diehl Stadium.
The win marked the Raiders' first regular season win at Karns City since 1972, ending an 0-9-2 drought there.
“I thought they had us there,” Brookville coach Scott Park said of the conversion attempt. “They were killing us on the right side most of the game.
“They went to the left and it looked like it was there. Speed kills. Ian made a tremendous play.”
Karns City quarterback Anthony Kamenski rolled to the right, stopped, and flipped a flare pass in the left flat to Rowe. The running back raced toward the goal line and lunged as Thrush made the tackle.
“From where I was standing, I couldn't tell if he got in,” KC coach Joe Sherwin admitted. “I know it was close.
“We had to go for two at some point. They were scoring on us early (on their OT) possessions. I thought the time was right to go for it at that point.”
Neither team ever led by a margin other than seven points all night. Karns City (3-2) took a 28-21 lead with 1:53 left in regulation on a 5-yard run by Luke Garing. It was Garing's third touchdown of the game.
While the Gremlins scored on time-consuming drives of 80, 70, 75 and 56 yards in regulation, Brookville was scoring on big pass plays to Thrush.
“Our kids never gave up,” Park said. “Even with less than two minutes to go,. they believed they could do it.”
And they did.
Thrush caught a 55-yard bomb from Robert Keth — the Raiders' back-up quarterback) — during Brookville's final possession of regulation. Still, Brookville faced a fourth-and-10 from the KC 14 with less than a minute to play.
Keth hit fullback Cole Labenne with a flare pass for 14 yards to the 1-yard line. Keth scored on a 2-yard run to force overtime with 23 seconds left.
Thrush caught 12 passes for 305 yards and five touchdowns in the contest. His third TD of regulation came on a 74-yard bomb when Brookville was facing a third-and-25 late in the third quarter.
“That was the one play we couldn't let him get behind us like that,” Sherwin said. “But these are kids, not robots. And just like everyone else, kids make mistakes.
“That kid (Thrush) is the fastest runner in District 9. We tried everything we could to stay with him. We just couldn't do it.”
Karns City had possession first in overtime. Kamenski — who carried 27 times for 156 yards — scored on a keeper on fourth down from the 1.
“Our defense didn't think he scored on that play,” Park said. “They (KC) thought they scored on that two-pointer. Maybe those things even out.”
Thrush caught a 10-yard scoring pass on Brookville's first offensive snap of OT to tie the game again. The Raiders took the lead when Keth hit Thrush in the end zone for a 15-yard TD strike on third down.
“I thought about going for two after that touchdown,” Park admitted. “We had first possession in that exchange ... That's the reason I didn't.”
Kamenski scored on a 7-yard run ion KC's second OT possession before the game ended on the foiled two-point attempt.
Garing had 16 carries for 114 yards for the Gremlins, who churned out 18 first downs anmd rushed for 355 yards on 64 carries.
Keth completed 18 of 27 passes for 356 yards for Brookville while filling in for Jack Krug, who injured an ankle last week.
“Our running, their throwing ... I thought this game would come down to that,” Sherwin said. “It's a tough one to lose, but we have to put it behind us.
“We've got a bunch of big ones ahead of us now.”
