Tigers roll past Butler
BUTLER TWP — North Allegheny quarterback Ben Petschke made an early mistake.
The Tigers made few afterward.
North Allegheny (7-0, 6-0) built a 42-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and cruised to a 49-14 Quad County Conference football victory over Butler Friday night at Art Bernardi Stadium.
On the first offensive snap of the game, Petschke threw a pass deep down the middle that was intercepted by the Golden Tornado's Zach Slomers in the end zone.
“Ben will be the first to tell you, he made a misread on that play,” North Allegheny coach Art Walker Jr. said. “He had Sam Sheridan wide open in the slot.
“Later on, he hit Sam for a touchdown on that same play.”
Butler (0-7, 0-5) started senior Dylan Fediaczko at quarterback. He was sacked by Brayden Prekop for a 12-yard loss on third down and the Tornado had to punt from their end zone. Luke Colella returned the kick 53 yards for the game's first points.
The Tigers scored touchdowns on their next four possessions to quickly put the game out of reach.
“We decided to mix our personnel a bit tonight, so we started the game with a predominantly senior group to see what they could do,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “We didn't pick up the blitz on that sack and wound up paying for it.”
Cooper Baxter played the bulk of the night at quarterback for Butler. The sophomore scored on a 75-yard run around right end in the second quarter. He had 91 yards on seven carries for the night.
Baxter threw for 77 yards, but North Allegheny intercepted four Butler passes.
“We got a lot of people in the game and they all had a purpose,” Walker said. “We expect all of our kids to play hard.
“We're only guaranteed 10 games a season and we have to make use of every one.”
The Tigers played their regulars for the first half. Sheridan scored on a 59-yard run and 15-yard pass completion. Ben Rohan returned an interception 34 yards for a score.
“I just told our kids to do the best they could,” Christy said. “All we could ask was for our guys to play hard for all four quarters and we did that.”
Fediaczko scored on a 7-yard run for the Tornado to cap a 67-yard drive in the fourth quarter. Butler scored two touchdowns in a game against North Allegheny for the first time since 2006.
“That's a positive, absolutely,” Christy said. “We have to look at things like that.”
Butler began the night with 27 healthy players suited up.
Julian Jones had a number of tackles for loss while playing through a bad shoulder for Butler.
“We just got him back,” Christy said. “That shoulder may need surgery after the season, but he's playing through it.
“We lost a couple of kids to concussions tonight and two more linemen went down. We get a couple back, we lose a couple. That's the way it's been going.”
North Allegheny remains at the top of the Quad County standings.
“We have to maintain our focus and keep playing well from week to week,” Walker said.
Butler travels to Central Catholic next Friday.
