Triple security up front

When it comes to running the triple option offense effectively, the quarterback needs to make the proper reads.

All in a split second.

But he's not alone.

The offensive tackles have to make the same call in the same amount of time.

“If the tackles aren't on the same page as the quarterback, it blows up,” Knoch head coach Brandon Mowry said of the play.

The Knights may be fortunate in that regard this season.

Hunter Roenigk, at 5-foot-11, 225 pounds, and Dalton Reed, at 6-1, 235, are seniors entering their third year as starting tackles for Knoch.

Eli Reese, a fellow senior at 6-3, 270, is in his second year as a starting guard.

“That's three of our five starting offensive linemen with a lot of experience,” offensive line coach Doug Kamer said. “That's huge for us.

“Without a veteran presence up front, this offense just isn't gonna go.”

Mowry agreed.

“There's a lot of responsibility on those tackles,” the head coach said. “They need to read the defense, get into the second level and tie up linebackers and the secondary.”

While Roenigk and Reed aren't huge as tackles go, quickness plays to their advantage.

So do the reps they've been taking over the years.

“That experience has been very helpful,” Roenigk said. “I can pick out things in a defense I had no clue about as a sophomore.

“It's a hard thing to describe. You just react to what you see because you know the quarterback is seeing the same thing.”

While Roenigk isn't planning on playing college football, Reed is hopeful his career does continue at that level.

“I don't even know what level I want to play at,” Reed admitted. “I just know I want to keep playing. Whoever will take me, give me a chance, I'll go there.”

In the meantime, he's building up a resume' while blocking in a unique offense.

And he loves every minute of it.

“You think about a tackle's responsibility being taking on the guy directly in front of him and winning that battle,” Reed said “While we're still part of the wall that way, we have to do so much more.

“We need to be able to run down the field, chip away at linebackers, sometimes do some pulling if that play is there. We have to be versatile, athletic and I welcome that challenge.”

Roenigk said he reads the middle linebackers and reacts based on where he believes those defenders are going.

“If they're trying to plug the middle, we do this,” Roenigk said. “If they're moving to a side, we do that. We just all have to be doing it together.”

Mowry conceded that his offensive line has to be consistent with its play-calling and execution.

“That's true of any offense, especially ours,” he said.

Reed is confident he and his fellow linemen will come through in a big way.

“I think we'll be the toughest line in the league. I truly believe that,” he said.
