Butler HOF announces 10th class

Sales, Smith, McElhaney joining relay unit, 1998 girls track team for induction ceremony Dec. 21

BUTLER TWP — The 10th induction class of the Butler Area School District Hall of Fame is taking on a different twist.

The 1998 Butler girls track team will become the first team to enter the Hall. The 4x800 meter boys relay team of Erinn Otterson, Kregg Kozik, John McGee and Adam Voll will be the first of its kind to be inducted as well.

Three individuals — multiple sport standouts Tyrell Sales and Jamie Smith, along with track and field star Jim McElhaney — will also be inducted. They will bring the number of individuals in the Butler HOF to 59.

All of the above will be introduced during the Butler boys home basketball game Dec. 21 against North Allegheny. They will formally be inducted during a ceremony in the high school cafeteria earlier that evening.

Here is a brief look at this year's inductees:

Tyrell Sales

A 2004 Butler graduate, Sales was a standout performer in football, basketball and track.

He was an all-state linebacker, defensive team MVP and went on to start at Penn State. He scored well over 1,000 points in basketball and is among the school's all-time scoring leaders.

Sales set the school record in the discus, was a state medalist and three-time WPIAL medalist.

Jamie Smith

A 1984 Butler graduate, Smith was starting quarterback for the Golden Tornado for four years and started at that position in the Big 33 Game his senior year. He went on to a stellar career at Geneva College.

Smith was starting point guard in basketball his junior and senior seasons and was named the team's best shooter his senior year.

He also lettered four years in baseball.

Jim McElhaney

A 1982 Butler graduate, McElhaney had a stellar career in the shot put and discus.

He won the WPIAL discus championship in 1981 and placed third at the state meet that same year with a throw of 163 feet, 4 inches. He was second in the WPIAL in the shot put in 1982 and placed third at the state meet that year.

4x800 Relay

The quartet of Kozik, Otterson, McGee and Voll won the state championship in 2001 and still holds the WPIAL record for fastest time in the event.

Their time of 7 minutes, 39.98 seconds was the second fastest time in the country and accorded the unit High School All-American honors.

The foursome combined to earn 30 varsity letters at Butler.

1998 Girls Track

This team was part of a Butler run from 1997 through 2000 that resulted in a 57-0 record and four consecutive WPIAL team championships.

The closest team to Butler in 1998 lost to the Golden Tornado by 47 points. The group of athletes comprising the Butler squad left with 14 of the 18 school records in track and field.

Ten of the athletes went on to compete in track collegiately. An 11th, Meghan Schnur, went on to a soccer career at Connecticut.
