Jayce Anderson (23) breakls free for a long run for Karns City in the Gremlins' 55-14 victory Friday night at Diehl Stadium,. Anderson rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns in the first half.

KARNS CITY — Interchangeable parts.

It was a concept crucial to the assembly line at the beginning of the 20th century.

And it's been crucial to the success of the Karns City football team so far in the 21st.

The Gremlins have always been generous with the number of players who are involved in the running game. They were again in a lopsided 55-14 home win over DuBois in front of a large crowd for COVID-19 standards Friday night at Diehl Stadium.

Jayce Anderson rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns, Luke Garing added two more rushing scores and 10 players had at least one carry for Karns City.

“I've said this before, I like the depth we have on this team,” said Karns City coach Joe Sherwin. “It could be a different guy stepping up each week and producing.”

It was multiple guys against overmatched DuBois.

Anderson gained his yardage on just six carries, Cole Coon rumbled for 61 yards on just eight attempts and the Gremlins rolled up 308 yards in a dominant running game — most coming in the first half.

A week after having more passing yards than rushing yards, Karns City kept the ball almost exclusively on the ground.

“Each week could be a different thing,” Sherwin said. “We were running the ball well. Why stop?”

Nothing, it seemed, could stop the Karns City offense.

The Gremlins only had to punt twice the entire night — at the end of the first half already leading 35-7 and very late during a running clock.

In fact, Karns City faced only three third downs in the first half.

On one of those third-down plays, quarterback Eric Booher ducked a couple of DuBois players and scrambled 16 yards for a touchdown.

Karns City's other quarterback, Brayden Christie, also had a rushing touchdown on a second-and-goal from the 26.

Booher attempted three passes, completing one for 15 yards to Micah Rupp. Christie never did put the ball in the air.

“I'm pleased with the way both quarterbacks played,” Sherwin said. “I think we'll stay with that system for now.”

Whatever could go wrong did go wrong for DuBois.

Dropped passes. Four turnovers. Large running lanes through their defense.

There were some bright spots, however.

Cam-Ron Hays threw for 131 yards and a touchdown in the first half, connecting with Dalton Yale for a 37-yard connection to knot the score at the time at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

Sophomore Austin Henery found some running room in the second half on the way to a team-leading 39 yards on the ground.

And Austin Mitchell threw a perfect pass to Dale Kot for a 32-yard touchdown late in the game.

Those moments, however, were few and far between.

Karns City's focus was getting off to a faster start this week after a sluggish one at the beginning of the season opener against Moniteau.

That mission was accomplished as Karns City scored on its first five possessions.

“The one thing we really focused on this week was we wanted to come out and have some early production on offense this week,” said Karns City coach Joe Sherwin. “Our running game was really there tonight.”

The Gremlins wasted little time in the third quarter triggering the mercy clock.

Kaden Scherer returned the second-half kickoff 80 yards to the 8 and Garing finished it off from there with the first of his two scores for a 42-7 lead just 20 seconds into the half.

Through two weeks, Sherwin is pleased with the direction his team is headed going into a big game at Brookville.

“We're playing well,” Sherwin said. “But we have to continue fixing our mistakes. We want to be playing our best football at the end of the season. There's a big challenge next week for us.”
